To many people, it’s just Thursday, but we want to take a moment to remember what happened on this date 69 years ago.

It was June 6, 1944 when 160,000 allied troops landed in Normandy to fight Nazi Germany. To put that in perspective, that’s the same number of people if you took every man, woman and child in Midland, Big Spring, Andrews, Kermit, Coahoma and most of Sterling City and put them all on the same beach.

More than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed that day which is more than both the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars since 2003.

But this wasn’t a fight in vain. Their sacrifice and effort helped liberate Europe, defeat Hitler and bring an end to the war.

If you’re looking to help honor our veterans, there are plenty of ways to do so.

You can support our living veterans and pay homage to fallen heroes by volunteering. You can find more by clicking here.

You can make a tribute video. Whether you are a veteran or know someone that served, you can make a video talking about what the men and women in our armed forces mean to you. If you do make a video, let us know about it as we’d love to share it.

There is also a charity called Homes for Our Troops. Just like during World War II, there are many veterans coming back from the wars overseas and many of them are facing added hardships. You can donate money for them to build homes for seriously wounded veterans at no cost to them by clicking here.

There’s also the Wounded Warrior Project which helps seriously wounded veterans by connecting them with caregivers to help them recover. You can find out more about them by clicking here

But not everything you do to honor them has to cost you money. If you have a relative or friend who has served, just saying thank you or helping them with an errand or a good deed is a great way.

From everyone here, we thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice!
